The Fox DataDiode software is available in two versions: an appliance version and a Core software version. The Fox DataDiode Appliance is a turn-key solution that enables transfer and sharing of files/folders, UDP streaming, transfer of e-mail, time synchronization using NTP and transfer of monitoring data. The Fox DataDiode Linux Core and Windows Core provide functionality to transfer files and do UDP and TCP streaming.
Fox DataDiode Appliance
The Fox DataDiode Appliance is a turn-key solution that enables transfer and sharing of files/folders, UDP streaming, transfer of e-mail, time synchronization using NTP and transfer of monitoring data. Transfer of files or replication/mirroring of folders works via standard protocols: FTP, sFTP, FTPs, CIFS/SMB, and SCP. By supporting a variety of protocols, customer’s needs and interoperability of systems can be ensured.
File transfer or folder replication using the Fox DataDiode Appliance works as follows: from a workstation or server in one network, files and folders can be sent to the upstream proxy using one of several standard protocols (FTP and FTPS, SCP and SFTP, CIFS or SMB, etc.). The Fox DataDiode software on the upstream proxy server replicates the files through the hardware data diode, and the downstream proxy receives them. In the downstream network, the files are sent through to a server or made available to users on that network.
Similar to replicating files and folders across the Fox DataDiode, email can be sent from a user or application in one network to a user or application in the other network. Systems generating emails in one network send these messages to the upstream proxy server. This is done via an email server in the network with a delivery route to the upstream proxy server (queried for via DNS). The Fox DataDiode software on the upstream proxy server sends the emails through the hardware data diode, and the downstream proxy receives them. In the downstream network, the emails are sent through to a mail server, based on DNS records, so users or specific applications can retrieve them on that network.
Backup and Restore
Backup and restore allows administrators to export the settings from the Data Diode and revert the settings to an old state by importing them again.
The maximum throughput of the Data Diode is for file-transfers up to 100 Mbits/s. For streaming data (UDP) the throughput is not limited by the software and speeds up to 800 Mbits/s can be reached.
The software takes full advantage of modern hardware platforms since it has been built to utilize multiples processor cores.
Access to services and the web-interface is now managed using separate access control lists. Additionally, access to different endpoints (FTP and CIFS) can be limited per user or group.
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) has been built into the Data Diode software. With SNMP it is possible to request settings and usage information from the Data Diode software. SNMP also allows special traps to be generated upon an error condition within the software e.g. when a transfer gets lost.
Fox DataDiode Windows Core
The Fox DataDiode proxy server software versions for Windows provides basic functionality: file/folder transfer and UDP and TCP streaming. This functionality may seem limited, but not less powerful. It provides a user experience that is in line with their operating system. Fox DataDiode Windows Core works as a Windows service and provides a graphical user interface for configuration.
The file and folder transfer features can be combined with custom or third party software or used in cooperation with network file sharing protocols supported by the operating system. This enables similar capabilities as the Appliance version, e.g. support for FTP, sFTP, FTPs, CIFS/SMB, and/or SCP, as described above.
UDP streaming through the Fox DataDiode for Windows can provide the same feature set as through the Appliance version of the software:
- SNMP traps
- CCTV video streams
- Any other UDP based streaming protocol
Fox DataDiode Windows Core
The Fox DataDiode Windows software consists of a service component and a configuration manager running on the upstream and downstream proxy servers. It has been built with flexibility in mind by allowing to address multiple data diode network interfaces on a single server. This enables options like redundancy and multiplexing.
The software has been built specifically to run on Microsoft Windows. It has the Works with Windows® Server 2008 R2 status and is Certified for Windows Server 2012. This ensures that the software has passed Microsoft’s standards for application compatibility on the platform (2008 R2) and meets Microsoft standards for compatibility and recommended practices with the Windows Server 2012 operating system
The Fox DataDiode Windows Core requires the following software components:
- Intel x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) architecture server.
- Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003, Server 2008, Server 2012 operating system.
- Microsoft .NET framework version 3.5 SP1 or later.
- WinPCAP version 4.1.1 or later.
- PDF viewer/reader for access to the manuals.
